CAROL TOOTOO
Growing up in rural Saskatchewan, Carol was taught the basics of sewing while in high school. After moving to the North and practicing as a hairstylist for many years, Carol developed severe chronic arthritis. She left her career and while at home, rediscovered the comfort of sewing for her family. Looking to advance her sewing skills and learn new techniques, Carol enrolled in the Fur Production and Design diploma program at Arctic College. During this two-year program, her skills were rewarded when she was given the opportunity to design and sew sealskin seat covers for Nunavut’s Legislative Assembly. As a result of this, she was later commissioned to design a sealskin and leather coat of arms table cover as well. Carol combines sealskin and leather with modern flair to create clothing and accessories that are stylish yet functional. She commonly uses scraps from one project in the next helping to ensure the whole animal, which commonly has been harvested for food, is put to use. She is inspired by the versatility and beauty of sealskin and strives to express its natural allure in her designs.
